A POETRY CONTEST ~ READ ON………..

A PEACEFUL CONVERSATION

What do you know about PEACE?

Well, I learned a Bible verse that talked about peace. John 14:27, Jesus said, "PEACE I leave with YOU. My peace I give unto YOU." I also learned that the word PEACE is in the Old Testament over 350 times.

But now I have a question. If PEACE is left with us and it is so important, what are we supposed to do with it?

That's a big question. Let me try an answer:
Leaders of countries around the world who love freedom work very hard to achieve and maintain PEACE.
Soldiers around the world are in harm's way working for PEACE and freedom.
Serious thinkers write seriously about PEACE so others will think about it.
NOBEL PEACE Prizes are given to people who have thought of and taught of ways to make peace grow.

But that sort of makes PEACE like a job.

Hmmmmmmm. You may have something there. PEACE-with 5 letters, it is a little word, but a very BIG job.

Hey, I'm just one person and a kid at that. You mean I have a job?

Yes. Each of us has the job to make PEACE grow. You do. I do. It is our parents' and grandparents' job, too. It is everybody's job.

So, PEACE is work, right? It just doesn't happen?

You've got that right. Each one of us has to work to make PEACE.

What can I do?

Each day in every way, we have to learn to live in peace-with our friends, our neighbors, with others whose ways are different than ours. We have to learn to and want to settle arguments through talking rather than fighting. We have to respect each other's rights, ways and beliefs.

I thought I was too young to have a job, but now I understand even though I'm just a kid I can work for PEACE. I've got a lot to think about and write about, too.

From December 1, 2003 through March 31, 2004, during the time of holy holidays observed by peoples of different faiths around the world and the hope of a NEW YEAR, more peaceful than the last, we are having a poetry contest, the first for Children's Worldwide Poetry for Peace.

To enter, we ask that you write a thoughtful poem about PEACE. Please follow our submission guidelines. (We cannot accept copyrighted poems.) Click here to read them.

Our Editorial Committee will consider the submissions and announce the contest winner on this site by April 30, 2004. The winner will receive a $25 prize and their poem will be featured on this site. The Committee's decision is final.

This is our first poetry contest. WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR ENTRY.
